They have been my anchormen – Afenyo-Markin praises Minority Whips

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has described the Minority Whips as the backbone of his leadership, crediting them with keeping the opposition caucus organised, disciplined, and effective in holding the government accountable.

In an interview on Channel One TV on February 16, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised that leading the Minority in Parliament can be overwhelming without a strong and coordinated whip team.

“In opposition you can be overwhelmed because when you are Minority Leader, the most powerful person, your right-hand man who gets you going, is your Chief Whip,” he stated.

He gave special praise to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, for his exceptional organisational skills.

“Annoh has done super in terms of his organisation. He and his team,” the Minority Leader said.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also commended Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Chief Whip, noting his growth and strength in advocacy.

“Habib came in first as a deputy whip and went through grooming. For some time, I allowed him to take up procedural issues and you realise that he is very strong in terms of advocacy,” he added.

The Minority Leader further recognised Jerry Ahmed Shaib, MP for Weija-Gbawe and Second Deputy Minority Whip, describing him as a reliable and dependable figure in the leadership structure.

“The three of them have become my anchormen. Without them you cannot function as a Minority Leader. You need a strong whip who understands. He is like your national security advisor,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed.

He explained that the success of the Minority caucus in parliamentary proceedings relies heavily on a well-coordinated whip system that is deeply rooted in procedure, strategy, and teamwork.
