Ablakwa’s political showmanship has cost Ghana — Bosome Freho MP

Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh has criticised the Minister for Foreign Affairs, accusing him of engaging in what he termed “political showmanship” at the expense of Ghana’s broader diplomatic interests.

The Bosome Freho MP alleged that the Minister’s actions were driven by a desire to secure political mileage rather than protect Ghana’s institutional advantages within both ECOWAS and the African Union (AU).

“But for the Minister’s lack of understanding of the institutional processes of ECOWAS and the AU, and his grave appetite for political showmanship to please his master, Ghana would have secured both positions,” he said.

He maintained that Ghana had a legitimate and strategic opportunity to lead the ECOWAS Commission at a critical time for the sub-region, particularly following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger from the bloc.

The legislator further argued that heading the ECOWAS Commission would have positioned Ghana to influence recruitment and policy direction within the institution, especially amid anticipated vacancies.

In his view, the alleged decision to prioritise the AU Chairmanship — which he insists was already guaranteed under the rotational system — represents a missed opportunity that could have strengthened Ghana’s regional standing and economic influence.
