The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 93 Nigerian nationals for their alleged involvement in internet fraud and immigration-related offences following a major intelligence-led operation in Accra.
The suspects, comprising 91 men and two women, were arrested during a raid on six houses at the Devtraco Estate.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Immigration Service, items recovered during the operation included counterfeit US dollars, fake gold bars, 82 laptops, 57 mobile phones, 17 television sets, and other household appliances believed to have been used to support the suspects’ activities.
The statement confirmed that 73 victims rescued during the operation—led by Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Newman Akuffo from the GIS National Operations Unit—had reportedly been subjected to severe torture and abuse by the suspects.
Further investigation by the Service revealed that some suspects had overstayed the 90-day visa-free entry period granted to certain foreign nationals, while others had entered Ghana through unauthorized routes.
The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service called on all foreign nationals living in Ghana to comply with the country’s laws and reassured the public that investigations are ongoing at the national headquarters.
The Service also stated that the 73 rescued victims have been repatriated to Nigeria.
