Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East Constituency at a ceremony in Parliament House, presided over by Speaker Alban Bagbin on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
Baba Jamal, representing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), won the by-election held on March 3, 2026, to fill the vacancy created by the death of the late MP Naser Toure Mahama in January.
He secured a decisive victory with 10,884 votes (approximately 63.33% of valid votes), defeating his main rival from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Baba Ali Yussif, who polled 4,009 votes.
During the proceedings, Speaker Alban Bagbin addressed the new MP personally, emphasising the need to focus on serving his constituents and warning that poor performance would draw strong opposition in future elections.
The Speaker indicated he would closely monitor the MP’s service delivery.
Second Deputy Minority Whip Habib Iddrisu, speaking on behalf of the Minority, commented on the by-election result, suggesting it reflected a decline in NDC support nationwide.
He also noted internal challenges within the Majority caucus, pointing out opposition from some regional leaders to Baba Jamal’s candidacy.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga welcomed the new MP, describing him as competent and expressing confidence that his experience would strengthen the Majority side in parliamentary debates and proceedings, helping it compete more effectively with the Minority.
Baba Jamal, a lawyer and former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC before his election, was Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
His appointment was revoked by President John Dramani Mahama in the heat of the NDC’s election for parliamentary candidate, which was marred by allegations of vote-buying.
