Mion MP calls for collective action to protect environment and combat climate change

The Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency, Misbahu Mahama Adams, has called for collective national action to protect the environment and combat climate change as Muslims across Ghana observe the holy month of Ramadan.

According to the lawmaker, the growing environmental challenges confronting communities, particularly the extreme heat currently being experienced in parts of Northern Ghana, underscore the urgent need for stronger commitment to environmental protection and climate resilience.

Delivering a statement in Parliament, Mr. Adams said the ongoing heatwave serves as a stark reminder of the real and increasing impact of climate change on livelihoods and public health.

He noted that while Muslims are observing the sacred period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection, many residents in the northern parts of the country are also grappling with unusually high temperatures which make daily life and fasting more difficult.

The MP explained that such harsh weather conditions highlight the need for sustained environmental stewardship and proactive climate action from both government and citizens.

Mr. Adams emphasized that protecting the environment is not only a civic duty but also a moral and religious responsibility, pointing out that Islamic teachings place strong emphasis on caring for nature and preserving the earth for future generations.

He cited the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, who encouraged tree planting and environmental preservation, noting that any act that contributes to the wellbeing of people, animals, and nature is regarded as an act of charity.

The Mion MP therefore urged Parliament, government institutions, civil society groups, and communities to intensify environmental conservation efforts, including large-scale tree planting programmes and sustainable land management practices.

He emphasized that such initiatives would not only help mitigate the effects of climate change but also improve livelihoods and protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather conditions.

Mr. Adams also used the opportunity to extend warm Ramadan greetings to Muslims across the country and encouraged them to observe the holy month with devotion, compassion, and mindfulness of their health.
He advised those fasting to take necessary precautions to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses, particularly during the current period of intense heat.
The MP recommended that Muslims ensure adequate hydration between Iftar, the breaking of the fast at sunset, and Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, while also limiting prolonged exposure to the sun and reducing strenuous activities during peak heat hours.

He further encouraged the consumption of nutritious meals, including fruits and water-rich foods, to help sustain energy levels throughout the fasting period.
Hon Adams urged citizens to use the Ramadan period as a time for reflection on humanity’s relationship with the environment and to commit to actions that promote sustainability and environmental protection.

He noted that safeguarding the environment is essential to ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for generations to come.
