‘Abandoned’ La Beach Towers under safety review – Engineering Council

The Engineering Council under the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources has confirmed that the abandoned La Beach Towers project is among several structures in Accra currently undergoing technical assessment over safety concerns.

The Registrar of the Engineering Council, Engineer Isaac Badu, disclosed this in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Monday, March 30, 2026.

He revealed that the Council has already held meetings with the developers and consultants involved in the La Beach Towers project as part of the ongoing assessment.

“We’ve had meetings with the developers and consultants, and we are assessing it. Once we complete our assessment, we will make recommendations,” Engr. Badu said.

The Engineering Council occasionally receives reports or identifies potentially unsafe structures during routine inspections. When concerns are raised, the Council conducts technical assessments to determine whether such buildings pose risks to the public.

“When there is activity and the need arises to investigate, we assess to ascertain whether structures are unsafe. If we establish that they are unsafe, then action is taken, and recommendations are made to the appropriate authorities,” he explained.

Engr. Badu noted that while the Engineering Council is responsible for technical assessments and recommendations, actual enforcement actions are carried out by the relevant Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), which have the legal mandate to act on such findings.

The development comes a day after the collapse of an uncompleted three-storey building at Accra New Town on Sunday, March 29, which resulted in the death of three people and left several others injured. The incident has heightened public concerns about building safety and regulatory enforcement in the capital.

La Beach Towers is a prominent unfinished luxury residential development located on the La Beach waterfront in Accra. The project, initiated around 2009 by Cypress Investments Limited, was planned as three 17-storey towers but has remained abandoned since around 2016 due to financial and ownership challenges.

The Engineering Council has assured that it will continue to monitor such structures to ensure compliance with building regulations and safeguard public safety.
