Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has described the newly introduced Airport Infrastructure Development Levy as ridiculous, warning that it will threaten economic activities and sink the local tourism sector in other regions of Ghana.
This comes after the levy took effect on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, resulting in significant increases in airfares for both domestic and international travels.
“Effectively, this clueless NDC Government is going to sink our local tourism sector and even local economic activities in the other regions with this ridiculous AI Levy (Airport Infrastructure Levy). This follows the already piled up burden in all other sectors. What a Waste of Time!” he stated in a Facebook post.
The new charges have pushed up fares across all routes. Domestic passengers are now required to pay an additional GH¢100 for flights within Ghana.
For regional travel, passengers will pay an extra $30 for one-way tickets and $70 for return trips.
International travellers will also be affected, with a $50 surcharge on one-way tickets and an additional $100 on return fares.
According to the government, the Airport Infrastructure Development Levy is necessary to address critical infrastructure gaps in the aviation sector.
Revenue generated from the levy will be used to finance several key projects, including the construction of a concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 at the Kotoka International Airport, the development of a 2,000-capacity car park at Terminal 3, and rehabilitation works at various regional airports.
Miracles Aboagye, however, argued that the levy, coming on the back of existing burdens on businesses and citizens, will negatively impact local tourism and economic activities outside the capital.
