The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his planned two-day “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region due to heightened security concerns in the area.
The decision follows a recent deadly attack on a military escort convoy in Binduri, linked to the ongoing volatile security situation in the Bawku area.
A senior member of the North East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) confirmed the suspension to JoyNews, stating that the move was taken after consultations with security agencies over the deteriorating situation.
The tour, which was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, was set to cover constituencies including Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu on the first day, with visits to Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi on Thursday, April 30.
Security agencies reportedly advised against proceeding with the visit as a precautionary measure to protect the NDC National Chairman, party supporters, and the general public.
“Anytime there are disturbances, there are spillover effects. To be safe, we have decided to avoid the trip and focus on finding a lasting solution to these issues,” the source said.
The source added that the party could not downplay the security threats, noting that there are other equally important engagements to attend to.
The “Thank You Tour” forms part of Mr Asiedu Nketiah’s post-2024 election outreach activities aimed at expressing gratitude to party supporters across various regions for their loyalty and contributions.
