President John Dramani Mahama has directed contractors working on the stalled Eastern Regional Hospital project to return to site and resume construction works.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, disclosed this during her keynote address at the launch of the Eastern Regional Hospital’s Centenary Celebration in Koforidua on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
According to the minister, the President’s directive demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality healthcare services in the Eastern Region.
“His Excellency has given directives for the contractor to return to the site and resume work on our hospital. The centenary celebration, therefore, provides an opportunity not only to celebrate past accomplishments but also to reaffirm our resolve to build a stronger and more robust healthcare system for our nation,” she stated.
The Eastern Regional Hospital project has remained stalled for some time, raising concerns among residents and healthcare stakeholders about the delay in expanding healthcare capacity in the region.
The announcement was made as part of activities marking the hospital’s 100th anniversary, with stakeholders using the occasion to reflect on the facility’s achievements and discuss its future development.
Reacting to the development, the Medical Superintendent of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr. Aiden Suntaa Saanwie, said management is also prioritising human resource development to ensure the facility is adequately staffed when completed.
He explained that efforts are being made to encourage healthcare professionals to pursue specialised training in key areas, particularly if the hospital is upgraded into a teaching hospital in the future.
“That is going to be my priority going forward, to make sure that people who are interested in various areas are pushed to go and specialize in these areas, so that by the time the facility is ready, we will have the manpower to man it,” he said.
Dr. Saanwie expressed optimism that the resumption of work on the project would help improve healthcare delivery in the region and support plans to expand specialised medical services.
The Eastern Regional Hospital remains one of the key referral health facilities in the region, serving thousands of patients annually.
