Two persons have lost their lives after a building collapsed in Cape Coast following heavy rainfall that struck parts of the Central Regional capital in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa, according to hospital authorities.
In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it responded swiftly to reports of a collapsed single-room structure at Gyagyaano, behind Yogurt Fie on Idan Fourth Alley, where four occupants had been trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue teams from the Cape Coast Metropolitan and Central Regional Fire Service headquarters immediately launched an operation and successfully extricated all four victims from the debris.
The victims, comprising one male and three females, were subsequently transported by the National Ambulance Service to the Ewim Polyclinic for medical treatment.
However, hospital authorities later confirmed the deaths of Anastasia Abakah and Adwoa Baduwa.
According to the Central Regional Command of the GNFS, preliminary investigations indicate that the structure collapsed after heavy rainfall weakened its structural integrity.
The Fire Service has urged residents occupying old mud houses and buildings showing signs of structural weakness to seek professional assessments and evacuate structures deemed unsafe, especially during the rainy season.
It further advised the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety to prevent similar tragedies.
