NPP Bantama executive elections halted after ballot boxes destroyed; three arrested

Three persons have been arrested by the police in the Ashanti Region for allegedly disrupting the ongoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections at Bantama in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Kumasi Cultural Centre, where voting was underway.

According to reports, the suspects stormed the polling centre and allegedly destroyed ballot boxes and ballot papers, bringing the electoral process to an abrupt halt.

A report by Adomonline.com citing an eyewitness account said the three individuals also assaulted officials supervising the election during the disturbance.

One election official sustained an injury to the foot and was rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Shaibu Bamba, the Bantama Constituency Organiser, and Abu, Chairman of the Adoato Polling Station. The identity of the third suspect has not yet been established.

Sources indicate that a court injunction had been placed on the Bantama constituency elections. However, some party executives allegedly proceeded with the exercise despite the order and without the involvement of the Electoral Commission.

Although the Electoral Commission reportedly withdrew from the process, police officers had been deployed to provide security at the polling centre early on Saturday.

However, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Osei Akoto Arthur, later visited the venue and directed the withdrawal of the police personnel.

According to the reports, as the officers were leaving the premises, a group of heavily built men entered the inner perimeter of the polling centre and began vandalising the election materials, leading to the disruption of the process.

Voting has since been suspended, with party officials awaiting a decision from the National Executive Council on the way forward while the police are expected to continue investigations into the incident.
