The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted approximately five million tramadol tablets with an estimated street value of GH¢100 million at the Accra International Airport.
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the seizure following an intelligence-led operation conducted by officials of the Commission.
According to NACOC, the shipment was intercepted after authorities received intelligence on a consignment suspected to contain illicit pharmaceutical drugs.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Friday, July 17, the Commission said the operation forms part of its continued efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect public health and national security.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the consignment was allegedly intended for distribution within Ghana and possibly other countries in the sub-region.
NACOC said investigators suspect the seizure may be linked to a broader drug trafficking network and are pursuing further leads to identify and arrest other individuals connected to the operation.
The Commission added that the seized tramadol tablets have been secured as evidence, while forensic and documentary examinations are ongoing to support investigations.
NACOC reiterated its commitment to dismantling narcotics trafficking networks and ensuring that persons involved in such activities face the full rigours of the law.
The public has also been urged to support law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities that may aid efforts to curb drug-related offences.
The three suspects are expected to be arraigned before court after investigations are concluded in accordance with Ghana’s narcotics laws.
