DDEP: Government pays GH¢10.82bn coupon to bondholders

The Government of Ghana has paid GH¢10.82 billion to bondholders under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), according to the Ministry of Finance.

The payment, totalling GH¢10,816,840,318.26, brings the total amount paid to DDEP bondholders since 2025 to GH¢41.36 billion.

The Ministry said the latest payment was the third DDEP coupon payment to be made entirely in cash, adding that the obligation was settled in full and on schedule.

According to the Ministry, the payment will help strengthen investor confidence, reduce Ghana’s sovereign default risk and reinforce the country’s financial credibility.

The latest payment follows an assurance by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson during the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament that the government would honour the coupon payment due on August 18.

Dr Forson said the payment formed part of the government’s commitment to honouring its obligations under the domestic debt restructuring programme.

He previously disclosed that the government had successfully completed its first DDEP coupon payment of GH¢10.1 billion on February 17, 2026, also in full and on schedule.

The DDEP, introduced as part of Ghana’s efforts to restore debt sustainability, involved the restructuring of domestic bonds held by banks, pension funds, insurance companies, individual investors and other creditors.

The government has maintained that timely servicing of the restructured debt is critical to rebuilding investor confidence following the country’s debt crisis and supporting efforts to restore access to international capital markets.

Dr Forson also disclosed during the Mid-Year Budget Review that Ghana had paid $2.1 billion in principal and interest to Eurobond holders since January 2025, without putting undue pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

The Finance Minister said consistent repayment of debt obligations, rather than public assurances, would be key to restoring confidence in Ghana’s economy.

The Ministry of Finance assured bondholders, investors and the public that all future DDEP obligations would be paid in full and on schedule.
