Teacher unions have called off their threatened strike following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, over concerns about the placement of teachers on the appropriate salary scales.

The meeting on Monday, August 31, 2026, resulted in a number of measures aimed at resolving the concerns and ensuring that affected teachers are placed on their correct salary scales.

As part of the resolutions, teachers will not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for the purpose of salary-scale placement.

The process is expected to result in the appropriate placement of close to 80,000 teachers on their correct salary scales.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to provide the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department with the requisite data to facilitate the necessary salary adjustments and payments to affected teachers.

The Ministry of Education said the agreement followed constructive engagement between the government and the teacher unions to address the concerns and prevent the planned industrial action.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to the leadership of the teacher unions for their cooperation and commitment to resolving the matter.

It said it remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that teachers receive their rightful entitlements in a timely and efficient manner.
