Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to transform the slum along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing as part of efforts to improve sanitation and public health conditions in the area.
The redevelopment is expected to begin after the military-led evacuation and clearing of the dumpsite, with the waste to be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam.
The project will also involve the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to improve sanitation and address the environmental challenges affecting the area.
The minister disclosed the plans to journalists during a visit to the area, expressing confidence that the clearing exercise would receive broad public support despite the possibility of resistance from some residents.
“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he said.
