Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has urged Ghanaians to remain patient and submit to the will of Allah, saying the changing nature of power and life demonstrates God’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the 2026 National Maulid hosted by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, at Fadama, Dr Bawumia reflected on how he and President John Dramani Mahama had attended the same event over the years in different capacities.
“This gathering itself is a perfect example of the changing nature of life and the absolute power of Allah. I recall that I have attended this same National Maulid in different capacities – I attended as a Running Mate, then I had the honour of attending as Vice President of the Republic, and today, I am here as a Former Vice President,” he said.
He noted that President Mahama had similarly attended the National Maulid at different stages of his political career.
“In the same vein, my senior brother, H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, who is represented here tonight, has also attended this Maulid as Vice President, then as President, then as Former President, and today, by the grace of Allah, he is back as President,” Dr Bawumia said.
According to him, the changing political fortunes of the two leaders demonstrate the sovereignty of Allah.
He cited Quran 3:26, which states: “Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.”
Dr Bawumia urged Ghanaians to accept the changing circumstances of life and remain patient regardless of their position or fortunes.
“Today you may be up, tomorrow you may be down. Today you may have, tomorrow you may not,” he said.
The National Maulid, which commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), brought together Ulama, Imams, traditional rulers, delegations from neighbouring West African countries and a representative of President Mahama.
Dr Bawumia, who is the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), also urged Muslims, particularly the youth, to emulate the virtues of Prophet Muhammad, including peace, unity, humility and discipline.
He further called on Ghanaians to strengthen peaceful coexistence and maintain cordial relations with people of other faiths.
