Ghana Water Limited (GWL) says it will resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as the dam’s water level approaches the 46-foot threshold.
In a statement issued by its Public Relations and Communications Department on Sunday, September 6, GWL said the water level at the dam had risen to 45.2 feet following heavy rainfall upstream and continued rains within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
According to GWL, the planned spillage is a precautionary measure to protect the dam and prevent any potential risk.
The company has, however, directed all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate the area ahead of the spillage to avoid any eventuality.
Residents have also been advised to remain vigilant, comply with official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could put their lives at risk.
Meanwhile, GWL has appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, residents’ associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
The company said some of the communities that may be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as adjoining communities.
“The safety of residents is still our priority, and public cooperation is essential,” GWL stated.
