Africa World Airlines welcomes first 102-seater aircraft as part of fleet expansion

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has taken delivery of its first 102-seater aircraft, marking a significant step in the Ghanaian carrier’s ongoing fleet expansion and transition to larger Embraer E190 jets.

The aircraft arrived to a short ceremony in Ghana on Saturday, September 19, 2026, following a three-day journey from China through Kazakhstan, Armenia and Tunisia.

The arrival forms part of AWA’s plan to expand its fleet with Embraer E190 aircraft. The airline has previously announced plans to build up to 10 E190s as it seeks to increase capacity on its domestic and regional routes.

The E190 offers substantially more seating capacity than AWA’s existing 50-seat ERJ-145 aircraft, with the new aircraft expected to provide additional capacity for passengers travelling on the airline’s network.

The arrival of the aircraft also coincides with AWA’s new visual identity, featuring a predominantly blue logo and refreshed aircraft livery.

The rebranding forms part of the airline’s 70th anniversary celebrations and is intended to give its aircraft a renewed Ghanaian identity as AWA expands its operations.

The aircraft also carries the inscription “Experience Ghana” at the rear, positioning it as a moving invitation to travellers around the world to visit Ghana.

The new livery incorporates Ghana’s national colours on the aircraft’s tail alongside the aviation blue design. AWA has said the branding is intended to retain its Ghanaian identity while reflecting its ambitions for greater connectivity across Africa and beyond.

The new aircraft and branding come as AWA continues to strengthen its network linking Ghanaian cities with regional destinations. The airline currently serves destinations including Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi, Lagos and Abuja, among others.

The fleet expansion is expected to increase AWA’s passenger capacity and support its growth ambitions as it seeks to strengthen its position in Ghana’s domestic and regional aviation market.
