NPP opens November 1–10 window for parliamentary aspirants to declare intent ahead of 2028 primaries
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled November 1 to 10, 2026, for prospective parliamentary candidates, including sitting Members of Parliament, to declare their intention to contest the party’s parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, announced the timeline at a press conference on Thursday, October 29, describing the exercise as the first step in the process leading to the primaries.
He said the party would assess prospective candidates against its constitutional requirements and the laws of Ghana to determine their eligibility to contest.
“Our prospective parliamentary candidates will be checked on whether or not, per our constitution, they indeed qualify to stand as or to be nominated as a parliamentary candidate for our party,” he said.
Mr Kodua Frimpong added that the party would verify whether aspirants met the legal requirements for parliamentary candidacy.
He stressed that declaring an intention to contest did not authorise aspirants to begin campaigning in their constituencies, as the party had not yet opened nominations.
“The party wants to reiterate that declaration of intent does not mean that a person has the right to go around and campaign in various constituencies. We have still not opened nominations,” he said.
Prospective candidates are expected to register through the party’s online portal, PPC.nppghana.org, and pay a fee of GH¢2,000.
Mr Kodua Frimpong described the declaration-of-intent process as a new initiative in Ghana’s political landscape, saying the NPP intended to lead the way in organising its internal electoral processes.
He further announced that the party would undertake a zoning exercise from November 1 to December 4, 2026, as part of preparations for the next phase of the parliamentary primary process, with the northern zone expected to begin the exercise.
The declaration-of-intent window will precede the formal opening of nominations and the vetting stages of the NPP’s parliamentary primaries, which will determine the party’s candidates for the 2028 general elections.
Both sitting MPs and prospective challengers are expected to undergo eligibility checks before the party proceeds to the subsequent stages of the process.
