The Coalition of Political Parties, led by senior executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), staged a peaceful demonstration in Accra today, successfully petitioning the government to lift the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The Chief Justice’s suspension was officially announced weeks ago by the Communications Department of the Presidency, following the establishment of a prima facie case based on three separate petitions calling for her removal from office.

At the conclusion of the demonstration, Minority Leader of the NPP Caucus, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, presented the petition to the Office of the President, urging consideration for the reinstatement of the Chief Justice. “We hope that this petition shall receive the needed support for the Chief Justice to go back to her office and do her work,” he stated.

The petition was received by the Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations, Stan Dogbe, who assured the public that all government actions regarding Justice Torkornoo’s suspension are constitutional and being handled by a competent committee. “Whatever actions and decisions that are being taken now are in line with the provisions of our 1992 Constitution… I believe that if the committee that has been set up completes its work, whatever decisions they make, just as the Council of State’s advice to the President was binding on him, so would their advice be binding on him,” he explained.
