Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has addressed the public regarding a recent altercation between himself and a police officer during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration held on Monday, May 5, 2025, in Accra.

The clarification follows an official invitation from the Ghana Police Service requesting his assistance in investigating the incident. Afenyo-Markin stated that the situation has been widely misrepresented, particularly on social media.

According to him, the officer involved, identified as Constable Forson, engaged in what he described as a “reprehensible and disgraceful act of violence” despite the demonstration being peaceful. Recounting the incident, the Effutu MP said he was assaulted by the officer as he approached the barricade at Parliament House. “As I approached the barricade, without any provocation, a uniformed police officer stationed behind the barricade—Constable Forson, a tall, fair, heavily built officer—deliberately struck the left side of my chest with the full force of his right palm directly near my heart,” he narrated.

He dismissed circulating interpretations of a viral video of the incident, insisting that the officer acted with intent, despite knowing his identity. “It was a deliberate, reckless, and targeted attack by an officer who clearly knew my identity and chose to physically assault me in broad daylight, in the full view of his senior colleagues,” he stated.

Drawing hsi statement to a close, Afenyo-Markin urged the public not to lose sight of the demonstration’s core objective. He also appealed to media outlets to avoid spreading misinformation. “In light of these facts, I urge all media outlets and the general public to refrain from spreading misleading narratives, and to join me in condemning the unprofessional and disrespectful actions of Constable Forson,” he said.
