Sammy Gyamfi Dollar Gift Saga: Some NDC members angry he gave $800 to an outsider, not them – Manasseh Azure

Investigative Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has claimed that some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are angered by the conduct of Goldbod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, not because of principle but because he gave the money in question to an outsider instead of them.

Manasseh sharply rebuked an X user who questioned why he had not commented on the ongoing dollar gift saga, which has sparked widespread political discussion. The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) even held a press conference demanding accountability.

In response, Manasseh asserted his editorial independence and made it clear that he is not obligated to comment on every issue to satisfy demands for political balance.

Dear follower (or specifically, a certain kind of follower),

It’s humbling to note that you value my opinion, and when there’s a topical issue, you would like to hear my view on it. I consider it a privilege to have a voice that matters. I don’t take your support for granted.…

— Manasseh Azure Awuni (@Manasseh_Azure) May 12, 2025

He made the striking claim that the outrage over Sammy Gyamfi’s $800 gift is not primarily motivated by national interest. Rather, he argued that if Sammy Gyamfi had embezzled $100 million, some of the very people attacking him would have defended him, if they had benefited from it.

“However, the reason this issue is causing more anger than the over $500 million scandal is not mainly due to national interest.
If Sammy Gyamfi had been accused of embezzling $100 million, some of his party members who attacked him for giving out $800 would have defended him.
Why?
They are not outraged about the conduct. They are angry because he bypassed them and gave the money to an outsider,” he said.

Manasseh also referenced his exposé on the $500 million SML-GRA contract signed under the NPP government. He pointed out that the state had already paid $141 million to SML, yet some of the people criticizing Sammy Gyamfi’s actions had either defended that scandal or attacked him for exposing it.

He further noted the inconsistency among political actors, stating:

“Some of you shouting yourselves hoarse over Sammy Gyamfi’s $800 gift either defended the SML scandal or attacked me for exposing it.
The NPP caucus in Parliament defended SML.
Today, the NPP caucus in Parliament is attacking Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct.” he said
