RTI request filed in Parliament over Bryan Acheampong’s US Air Force service

A Ghanaian citizen has reportedly filed a Right to Information (RTI) request with Parliament to verify whether New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Bryan Acheampong fulfilled his 2023 promise to provide details of his enlistment and discharge from the United States Army.

According to a report by asaaseradio.com on Thursday, November 6, 2025, the request, submitted on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, and received by Ms. Sophia Sosu at Parliament House, seeks confirmation on whether the Appointments Committee received Dr. Bryan Acheampong’s certificate of honourable discharge or related documents verifying his service in the United States Air Force.

It also demands certified copies or sufficient details from any records indicating his ranks of enlistment and discharge, if provided to the committee.

The application invokes sections 1, 18, and 23 of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), requiring a response within 14 days—by November 18, 2025.

During his 2023 vetting as Minister for Food and Agriculture designate, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, who had previously served as National Security Minister, promised to submit his honourable discharge certificate after questions from the committee, particularly from Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, then Ranking Member, and Governs Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu.

Mr. Agbodza had asked: “On your CV, you said that between 2005 and 2009, you enlisted in the United States Air Force. May I know the rank at which you were enlisted and the rank at which you left the US Air Force?”

Dr. Acheampong responded: “All details of my operations at National Security… were discussed with you and with foreign governments… but I am able to provide that to you, leadership of this house.”

When pressed on disclosing his ranks, he added: “You are in leadership and you will be apprised with that information today.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, when you leave the military, you will either be given an honourable certificate or a dishonourable one. Immediately after [this sitting], I will produce my honourable discharge certificate, which will detail everything I did in the military (US),” he further clarified.
