AMA busts fake marriage certificate syndicate

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has uncovered a syndicate allegedly issuing fake marriage certificates to unsuspecting members of the public, prompting an immediate investigation in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service.

The fraudulent operation came to light after a client’s marriage certificate, purportedly obtained through the syndicate, was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application process due to inconsistencies. The matter was subsequently reported to the AMA.

Speaking on the development, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, confirmed that the Assembly had detected the illicit activities and promptly referred the case to the police for a comprehensive probe.

Preliminary findings indicate that the individuals involved were forging documents while posing as facilitators of marriage registration at the AMA.

Although no arrests have been made yet, Mr. Ankrah assured that the Assembly is fully cooperating with law enforcement to dismantle the network and identify all parties involved.

He emphasized that the AMA will not tolerate any actions that undermine the credibility of its marriage registration processes, urging the public to conduct all marriage-related transactions directly through the official Marriage Registry.

“The matter is currently under investigation, and we urge the public to remain vigilant. Anyone who has been approached by such individuals or suspects foul play should report immediately to the Assembly or the nearest police station,” he stated.

Mr. Ankrah further advised citizens to verify the authenticity of their marriage certificates directly with the AMA.
