President John Dramani Mahama has visited the 37 Military Hospital in Accra to check on victims injured in a deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise.

The President toured the hospital’s emergency ward, where he received direct updates from medical personnel on the patients’ conditions and the ongoing treatment efforts.

He was joined by several senior government officials, including Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson, who doubles as the Acting Minister for Defence.

At least six people have been confirmed dead in the incident, with 12 others in critical condition.

Five of the critically injured are currently receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to the GAF, the stampede erupted when thousands of eager applicants overwhelmed entry points at the stadium in a frantic bid to enlist.

The massive crowd triggered intense pushing and shoving, leading to chaos, injuries, and loss of life.

Security forces have sealed off the area, with military personnel blocking key roads to the stadium to restore calm and facilitate rescue operations.

The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital morgue.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces has affirmed the number of casualties. According to the GAF, reports indicating that the number of the deceased is 12 are not true.
