GAF recruitment: Officials in charge of El-Wak screening asked to step aside

Senior military officers who oversaw the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at El-Wak Sports Stadium have been directed to step aside as the military launches a full investigation into the tragic stampede that claimed six lives.

According to a JoyNews report, sources within GAF confirmed that new commanders have been appointed to assume control of the recruitment process once it resumes, ensuring transparency and safeguarding the integrity of the ongoing probe.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, November 12, during screening at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

Thousands of applicants, many having travelled from various parts of the country, began queuing as early as dawn.

A sudden surge at one of the entry gates triggered a stampede, resulting in the deaths of six young women and injuries to several others.

The injured were immediately rushed to the 37 Military Hospital and other nearby facilities for urgent medical attention.

In an immediate response, GAF suspended all recruitment activities in the Greater Accra Region and established a Board of Inquiry to probe the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

President John Dramani Mahama has also ordered a nationwide suspension of the recruitment exercise until the
investigations are concluded.

A similar stampede occurred at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on the same day, where some people sustained injuries, though no fatalities were recorded.
