Afenyo-Markin extortion allegations: OSP receives three petitions, begins assessment

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) says it has taken note of allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, the OSP said it had also received three petitions in connection with the allegations.

The anti-corruption agency said one of the petitions was jointly submitted by two persons, while two other petitions were submitted separately by other individuals.

The OSP said, given the nature of the allegations, it would assess the matter to determine whether it falls within its statutory mandate and whether further investigative action is warranted.

The development follows a public dispute between Mr Gyamfi and Mr Afenyo-Markin, with the GoldBod CEO accusing the Minority Leader of extortion.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has rejected the allegations, describing them as false and defamatory. He has maintained that his actions concerning GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme are part of his constitutional responsibility as Minority Leader to provide parliamentary oversight.

The OSP has the mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption and corruption-related offences, including extortion under Section 151 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), where the offence falls within its jurisdiction.

The Office says it will first assess the allegations and determine whether they fall within its statutory mandate and warrant further investigative action.

The OSP cautioned that the mention of a person in connection with an inquiry does not imply culpability, and that persons under inquiry are entitled to the presumption of innocence.
