The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West in the Ashanti Region, Abubakar Sedik, has died after a brief illness.
Mr Sedik reportedly passed away on Sunday evening, September 20, 2026, after falling ill upon his return to Mankranso from Kumasi.
The late DCE had been in Kumasi to participate in an engagement with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, who was in the city to engage stakeholders on the completion of the Kejetia Phase Two Redevelopment project.
According to the local assembly, Mr Sedik fell ill after returning from the meeting but could not survive.
The assembly announced his death in a Facebook post, writing: “Rest well, Hon. Abubakar Sedik. You served your people with a good heart.”
The Ashanti Regional Minister has also expressed profound sadness over the sudden passing of the DCE.
In a condolence message, the Regional Minister described the death as a great loss to Mr Sedik’s family, the people of Ahafo Ano South West, his colleagues, the Ashanti Region and the government.
He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, loved ones, colleagues and constituents of the late DCE, and prayed for God to grant them strength and comfort during the difficult period.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Mr Sedik’s soul.
“Rest well, Hon. DCE,” he said.
The death of Mr Sedik comes days after his district attracted public attention over an alleged attempt to demolish a school facility at Mankranso.
He was accused of spearheading the move to demolish the facility to pave the way for the construction of a 24-hour economy market.
Mr Sedik, however, denied the allegation.
Before his appointment as DCE, Mr Sedik contested the Ahafo Ano South West parliamentary seat as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate in the 2024 general elections.
