Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed frustration over a series of security actions targeting him and his businesses. He questioned whether he is still considered a Ghanaian citizen under the current administration led by President Mahama.
Earlier today, a joint team comprising National Security officers and Police personnel stormed his residence to execute a search warrant.
Chairman Wontumi voiced his concerns during a phone-in interview on his television station, Movement TV. He questioned why his bank accounts have been frozen, despite not holding any government position in the Akufo-Addo era.
He claimed that President Mahama had collapsed his businesses after winning the recent elections, just as he allegedly did in 2013 when the NDC consolidated power after the 2012 elections.
“I can’t even pay my children’s school fees because all my accounts have been frozen. Why? Am I no longer a Ghanaian? Is it because Mahama is now President that I cease to be Ghanaian? Ghanaians and NPP members must wake up. It is because of you that Mahama is doing this to me.”
“I have never been a Vice President, never been a board member, never been a CEO, never been a Minister. I have only served as a party chairman, campaigning for my party based on the mandate I was given. You won the elections. In 2013, you did the same thing. When you came into power, you collapsed my businesses. When we returned to power, I let it go. Now that you’re back, you’ve shut down all my businesses. Even paying my children’s school fees is a problem. You’ve frozen all my accounts—what state funds passed through me?” he questioned emotionally.
On April 21, 2025, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources directed the revocation of Akonta Mining’s license, citing violations of Ghana’s mining regulations and involvement in criminal activities.
Subsequently, on April 24, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze all bank accounts linked to Chairman Wontumi and his mining company, Akonta Mining, following allegations of financial irregularities.
