AMA installs ‘Obaakɛ’ welcome signage on headquarters building

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has mounted a welcome signage on the main façade of its headquarters along High Street in Accra Central, bearing the Ga greeting “OBAAKƐ – WELCOME”.

A video captured by The 1957News shows fresh green banners bearing the inscription “OBAAKƐ – WELCOME” in bold white letters across the upper section of the AMA building.

The installation forms part of an initiative by the AMA and authorities in the Greater Accra Region to promote the Ga language and affirm the cultural identity of the indigenous people of the capital.

Similar “Obaakɛ” welcome signs were introduced earlier in 2025 at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and in September, the AMA directed all schools within the metropolis to display “Obaakɛ” at their entrances.

Some political leaders of Ga heritage have consistently advocated for greater recognition of Ga as the host language of Accra.

AMA officials have stressed that the move is intended to celebrate the indigenous language of the capital and does not seek to undermine the value of other Ghanaian languages, including Akan.

Notice: The above script has been amended to reflect the true facts about the installation of the “Obaakɛ” signage by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly at its head office.
