Joseph Akasake Abaa, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo in the Upper East Region, has passed away after a short illness.
The cause of his death remains unknown at this time.
Sources close to the family revealed that Mr. Abaa died on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the Upper East Regional Hospital (also known as the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital) in Bolgatanga.
Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, the Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), confirmed the sad news in an interview, describing it as “shocking and unexpected.”
Mr. Abaa was nominated as DCE by President John Dramani Mahama and was duly confirmed by the Bongo District Assembly in April 2025.
Prior to his appointment, he had served as an Assembly Member for the Zorko-Goo-Awaah electoral area for three consecutive terms, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to community service.
Within the NDC, Mr. Abaa held key positions, including Bongo Constituency Youth Organiser and later Constituency Secretary in 2022.
Beyond politics, he worked professionally as a storekeeper at Sirigu Integrated Senior High School and Zuarungu Senior High School.
The sudden demise of Mr. Abaa has come as a major blow to the people of Bongo District, the Upper East Region, and the wider NDC fraternity, where he was well-regarded for his dedication and service over the years.
