Calls for a Mahama third term driven by sycophancy, bootlicking

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has lambasted party members advocating for President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third term, branding such calls as pure sycophancy and bootlicking motivated by personal political ambitions.

Mr Kwetey made the remarks during the 44th Anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

He expressed deep concern over what he described as creeping sycophancy within the party, warning that excessive praise-singing erodes the NDC’s foundational principles of unity, integrity, and service to the nation.

“It saddens me when I see so much sycophancy creeping into our party. Some people seem to believe that singing the praises of a leader is the only way they can survive politically. That is why you hear calls for a so-called third term. It is nothing but pure sycophancy and bootlicking of the highest order,” Mr Kwetey stated.

He emphasised that genuine love for the party and the country should prioritise national interest over individual gains, adding that such behaviour does not align with the NDC’s core values.

Mr Kwetey drew a historical parallel, noting that the party’s founder, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, faced no similar pressure for a third term during his tenure.

“If you truly love this country and this party, you will not engage in such sycophancy. These are people who believe praise will earn them opportunities, but that is not what the NDC stands for,” he added, underscoring that the current demands reflect a betrayal of loyalty to both the party and Ghana.
