Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite and work towards winning the 2028 general elections, describing the party’s return to power as a key objective of its current efforts.
He said the party must seize the opportunity presented by the 2028 election and ensure it returns to government after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“Come what may, we have to win this election, so the opportunity is 2028; let us grab it, and make sure that we bring NPP back into office,” he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo made the remarks when the NPP Director of Communications hopeful, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, paid a courtesy call on him in Accra on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, to officially inform him about his decision to contest the position in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.
Mr Aboagye had assured the former President that, if elected, he would build a sophisticated communication machinery capable of shaping the party’s narrative while it remains in opposition.
Responding to him, Nana Akufo-Addo said the communications portfolio would be critical to the NPP’s efforts to rebuild and return to power.
“You are taking up one of the most challenging aspects of our fight back, the communications arena,” he said.
“To a large extent, whether we prevail or not will depend on the work that you are going to do, so I am happy that somebody of your quality and commitment has decided to take up this challenge. You have a big challenge ahead of you.”
The former President also called on Mr Aboagye and other party members to unite behind the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He said the party’s internal elections should not create divisions that could undermine its preparations for the 2028 general elections.
“The elections breed competition, when the die is cast on October 1, and I am confident you will win. You have to bring everybody on board and unite all factions in this party behind our flagbearer to make sure he gets onto the seat in 2029,” he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo expressed confidence in Mr Aboagye’s prospects and said he expected to hear positive news after the internal elections.
“I want to wish you the very best, and I am confident that on October 1, I will hear good news; I will be in Kumasi,” he added.
The NPP is scheduled to hold its national officers election on October 3, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2028 general elections.
The National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) of the party has said 50 nomination forms were purchased across the nine national officer positions being contested.
The nomination period closed on August 22, 2026, with the NOEC describing the exercise as successful and peaceful.
The filing of completed nomination forms is scheduled to close on August 29, following a two-day extension granted by the NOEC.
Vetting of aspirants is expected to take place from August 31 to September 3, with the results scheduled for publication on September 5.
The appeals process will follow from September 6 to 7, while the National Council and National Executive Committee are expected to meet on September 10.
The notice of poll is scheduled to be issued on September 14 ahead of the national officers election on October 3.
