ECG engineers battle pythons at Ahodwo transformer to restore power

Engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region risked their lives to restore power supply after a nest of pythons took over a transformer substation at Ahodwo in Kumasi.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 24, 2026, when residents along the Ahodwo-Daban-Dr Asafo Adjei Road were hit by a power outage following a fault on the distribution feeder serving the area.

According to a Joynews report, a fault team from ECG’s Ahinsan District was immediately dispatched to investigate and restore electricity to the affected residents.

The team successfully restored power to a section of the households. However, residents around the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill companies along the stretch remained without supply.

In a bid to resolve the issue, the engineers proceeded to a nearby transformer to replace a blown fuse. Upon arrival, they were confronted by a python that had taken over the substation.

Ahinsan District Engineer, Kwaku Appiah, who confirmed the incident, said attempts by residents to capture the snake proved futile as it crawled beneath the substation to hide.

Undeterred, the ECG team risked their lives to quickly replace the fuse and restore power to the remaining areas.

Officials from the Kumasi Zoo were later called in to assist with the removal of the reptiles. While attempting to capture the first python, the team discovered a second one.

The snakes, believed to have been inhabiting the substation for weeks, were eventually removed along with their eggs around 9:00 pm on the same day.

ECG General Manager for the Ashanti West Region, George Amoah, has advised customers to report all power outages through official ECG channels or via the company’s stakeholder WhatsApp platforms for prompt resolution.
