The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside pending investigations into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.
The directive follows a major fire incident at the facility, which severely disrupted power transmission and triggered widespread outages across several parts of the country. The blaze affected critical control systems at the Akosombo installation, exacerbating ongoing challenges with electricity supply and leading to prolonged power cuts for businesses and households.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the fire and evaluate the full extent of damage to key infrastructure. The Minister’s decision according to the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is intended to facilitate an independent and transparent probe into the incident without any potential interference.
In a related move, there has been a significant reshuffle in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region. These changes part of broader efforts to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen power distribution amid the current energy sector difficulties.
The developments come amid growing public frustration over unreliable electricity supply, as Ghanaians continue to bear the brunt of the disruptions.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition is scheduled to hold a press briefing at 2:00 p.m. today, Monday, April 27, 2026, to provide further details on the situation. The briefing will address recent developments in electricity distribution, ongoing interventions, and steps being taken to stabilise the national grid.
The government has reassured the public of its commitment to restoring stable power supply and tackling the root causes of the persistent outages.
