FDA impounds 98 unregistered herbal medicines in Accra

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has seized 98 unregistered herbal medicinal products during a three-day market surveillance operation in parts of Accra.

The exercise, conducted from November 22 to 24, 2025, targeted markets at Awoshie and Boundary Road, where enforcement officers confiscated several popular brands being sold without FDA approval.

Among the impounded products were Amenazel Herbal Tonic, Amenazel Herbal Bitters, and Poget Herbal Mixture.

The FDA described the operation as part of its continuous nationwide campaign to rid the market of unapproved and potentially harmful herbal medicines in order to safeguard public health.

In a strong warning to traders and manufacturers who continue to deal in unregistered products, the Authority vowed to step up enforcement in the coming weeks.

“To those selling unregistered products, we will not relent in our commitment to ensuring public health and safety, so sooner than you think we will get to you,” the FDA stated.

All confiscated items are scheduled to be destroyed in accordance with the Authority’s standard disposal protocols.
