Four Ghanaians die amid South Africa xenophobic crisis – Ablakwa

Four Ghanaians have died amid the recent wave of xenophobic violence and related incidents targeting African nationals in South Africa, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.

The deceased include 44-year-old Bashiru Issahaq, a father of three, who was killed on June 30, 2026, in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, during an attack by anti-immigrant demonstrators.

Another Ghanaian, Kwadwo Antwi, was murdered in Prieska in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province on July 18.

Amoonu Jailor Nash was also murdered by unknown assailants in East London on April 3, while Ebenezer Ayi Tawiah, who was reportedly unable to access medical care amid harassment by South African vigilantes, died upon arrival at the Accra International Airport on August 17.

Mr Ablakwa said the government had engaged South African authorities over the cases and was pursuing diplomatic and legal avenues to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

In the case of Mr Issahaq, the Ghanaian government lodged a formal protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and filed a complaint with the South African Police Service.

The government also facilitated the repatriation of his remains to Ghana and authorised an autopsy after his body arrived in the country.

The Minister said the government remained committed to supporting the affected families while pursuing justice for the deceased.

He also extended condolences to the families of the four Ghanaians on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the government.
