Ghana Air Force takes delivery of brand-new Airbus helicopter

The Ghana Air Force has taken delivery of a brand-new Airbus H175 helicopter from France, in a key milestone for the modernisation of its fleet.

The state-of-the-art aircraft arrived in Accra on Thursday, March 5, 2026, following a successful ferry flight from Marignane, France, where it underwent all required technical acceptance procedures with manufacturer Airbus Helicopters.

According to an official post by the Ghana Armed Forces, the delivery forms part of a broader defence procurement programme approved by Parliament to boost the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The helicopter’s journey followed a carefully planned route, transiting through Spain and North-West Africa before proceeding south along the West African Atlantic coast, crossing several countries en route to Ghana.

The acquisition aligns with Ghana’s January 2026 contract with Airbus Helicopters, under which the Ministry of Defence ordered four helicopters: two H175M multi-mission variants, one ACH175, and one ACH160.

The newly delivered H175 is believed to be one of the H175M units, marking the first arrival in the batch and Airbus Helicopters’ return to supplying Ghana after previous collaborations.

The H175 platform, part of Airbus’ super-medium helicopter class since 2014, offers long range, high payload capacity, and versatility for onshore and offshore missions, making it suitable for the GAF’s diverse operational needs.

This procurement supports ongoing efforts to enhance the Ghana Air Force’s capabilities amid its existing fleet, which includes Russian Mil Mi-17/171 and Chinese Harbin Z-9 helicopters.
