Ghana Armed Forces launches rescue operation after gunmen attacked Senya Breku fishermen

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched an ongoing search and rescue operation at sea following an armed attack on fishermen off the coast of Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

The Ghana Navy, supported by the Ghana Air Force, initiated the operation since dawn on Thursday, approximately 35 nautical miles offshore from Senya Bereku in the Awutu Senya West District.

The incident involved gunmen who reportedly raided fishing vessels during a night fishing expedition, firing warning shots, holding victims at gunpoint, and seizing valuables including outboard motors, generators, and other equipment.

Reports indicate that more than 50 fishermen were left stranded at sea after the assailants made off with at least seven outboard motors and generators, rendering their canoes immobile.

In a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations, GAF confirmed the operation is in progress.

“The Ghana Navy supported by the Ghana Air Force have been conducting a Search and Rescue Operation since dawn at sea, 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Bereku in the Central Region. This follows an attack on some fishing vessels in the general area,” the statement read.

“The Operation is ongoing and the Ghana Armed Forces appeals to all to remain calm. Further details to be communicated.”

The release was signed by Captain (Ghana Navy) Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General Public Relations.

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, has confirmed the armed attack, noting that affected fishermen remain at sea awaiting rescue assistance from naval and marine police teams.

Eyewitness accounts describe the gunmen overpowering the fishermen without resistance before carrying out the robbery and fleeing.

GAF urged the public to stay calm as rescue efforts continue, with additional updates expected from military authorities.
