Govt renews curfew on Bawku as President Mahama awaits Otumfuo’s mediation report

The government has renewed the curfew in Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region, effective Monday, December 15, 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry of the Interior, acting on advice from the National Security Council, announced that the curfew hours will run from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am.

The renewal comes amid heightened security measures as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, prepares to submit his mediation report on the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict to President John Dramani Mahama.

The presentation is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at the Presidency in Accra.

A total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons remains in force within the Bawku Municipality and its environs.

The statement warned that any person found in possession of such items will be arrested and prosecuted.

The government appealed to chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents of the area to exercise restraint and use non-violent means to promote peace amid the ongoing challenges.

The mediation process, initiated by President Mahama earlier in 2025, has involved months of engagements aimed at resolving the protracted conflict, which has led to intermittent violence over the years.

The Asantehene’s report is expected to outline progress made, challenges encountered, and recommendations for sustainable peace in the region.
