GRA saves GH¢3.6 million revenue in major smuggling crackdown

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in collaboration with National Security operatives, has intercepted large quantities of smuggled and under-declared goods at the Tema Port and Aflao border, preventing an estimated GH¢3.6 million in revenue loss to the state.

Announcing the seizures at a press conference on Thursday, November 27, 2025, Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong revealed that over 9,000 jerry cans of cooking oil were confiscated in the Tema area following intelligence-led operations.

At the Aflao border, GRA Customs officers intercepted several consignments that had been deliberately misclassified or concealed to evade payment of appropriate import duties. The seized items included large quantities of rice, sugar, sugar, assorted beverages, tomato paste and second-hand clothing.

Mr Sarpong described the operations as part of an intensified nationwide campaign against smuggling, under-declaration and misclassification of goods, which continue to deprive the country of critical revenue needed for development.

He warned importers and clearing agents engaged in fraudulent practices that the Authority will continue to deploy enhanced risk-management systems, intelligence sharing and physical examinations to curb revenue leakage.

The seized goods are currently impounded pending further investigation and possible prosecution of the importers involved. The GRA has assured the public that legitimate trade will continue to be facilitated while smuggling and revenue fraud are decisively tackled.
