Has the blood and toil of our forefathers not reached the threshold? – A Plus expresses frustrations over accidents

Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has questioned the nation’s seeming acceptance of the frequent road accidents on Ghana’s roads, including the Accra-Kumasi highway.
His comments come in the wake of an accident on the Accra–Kumasi Highway early Monday morning near Mile 44, where a passenger bus collided with a diesel trailer, killing 10 people and injuring several others. The bus was carrying 33 passengers at the time of the crash, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.
In a Facebook post reacting to the latest incident and the recent ban on Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial use, the MP expressed frustration over what he sees as selective enforcement and systemic neglect of road safety.
“The day I heard about the ban on Toyota Voxy vehicles due to accidents, I couldn’t help but ask; if that is the case, then why are VIP buses still on our roads?” he wrote.
A Plus noted that the Accra–Kumasi highway “has claimed far more lives than HIV, yet we seem to accept it as normal.”
He linked the national psyche to the words of the Ghana National Pledge, which speaks of a “heritage won for us through the blood and toil of our fathers,” suggesting Ghanaians have subconsciously embraced suffering as part of their reality.
“Yes, the vehicles and drivers play a role. But what kills most is the state of our roads—no streetlights, no proper road markings, and broken-down vehicles abandoned in the middle of the road, just to mention a few,” he stated.
The lawmaker, who has been vocal on governance and social issues since he was elected MP for Gomoa Central in the 2024 polls, wondered if the country would continue waiting for tragedies to pile up before decisive steps are taken.
“Are we not tired of these reports? Or has the ‘blood and toil’ still not reached the threshold?” he asked rhetorically.
The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) last week announced a ban on the use of Toyota Voxy for commercial use, following a technical committee’s investigation into multiple crashes involving the vehicle.
