How do we blame Bawumia for NPP’s defeat? – Adwoa Safo questions

Former Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has questioned attempts to blame the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 presidential election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for the party’s defeat.
In a viral video, Adwoa Safo, who has been campaigning for Dr Bawumia in the party’s January 31, 2025, presidential primaries, emphasised collective responsibility for the defeat instead of singling out the former Vice President.
“Was Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the Finance Minister? Were we not in government when our MPs said our finances were not going well and called for the removal of the Finance Minister? Was he removed? Did he not mess things up before he was asked to go home? How do we blame this on Dr Bawumia? If you are a mate and your master is driving, can you shove him aside and take over the car?
“We are just not being truthful. We destroyed things ourselves; we didn’t listen when we were spoken to. We even went for money meant for pensioners. A lot of things led to our defeat in the 2024 election. It was not because of one individual. It is not Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who was the cause,” she stated.
The NPP suffered a defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, losing power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Following the election, the party has been engaged in restructuring, including an early presidential primary aimed at helping it build a formidable front for the 2028 general elections.
