The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Akosombo Hotels Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce a new tourism package dubbed the “Heritage to Leisure Tour”, aimed at connecting Ghana’s historical heritage with leisure and experiential tourism.

The agreement was signed on Monday, June 15, 2026, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

The two-day experience, scheduled for September 4 to 5, 2026, will take participants on a curated journey from the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to Akosombo, where some of his most significant development projects are located.

The package will begin with a VIP guided tour of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Museum, followed by a brunch experience and souvenir presentation. Participants will then travel to Akosombo, where they will be accommodated at the Volta Hotel.

The itinerary also includes a guided tour of the Akosombo Dam, dinner and overnight stay at the Volta Hotel, and a luxury cruise aboard the Dodi Princess on the Volta Lake. The cruise experience will feature live entertainment, onboard lunch and cultural leisure activities.

According to the concept note for the initiative, the tour seeks to combine heritage tourism, cultural storytelling, hospitality and recreation into a single tourism product that showcases Ghana’s history and tourism potential.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, General Manager of Akosombo Hotels Limited, Steven Ofori, said the partnership was inspired by the historical connection between Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the Akosombo project.

He noted that while many visitors come to the memorial park to learn about Ghana’s first president, the initiative would also give them the opportunity to visit Akosombo and experience one of the landmark projects associated with Nkrumah’s vision for national development.

“We want to link that history of Nkrumah to Akosombo so that anybody who comes to the mausoleum not only visits where he is buried but also comes to Akosombo to experience the scenery, the beauty, the dam and the other attractions,” he said.

Mr. Ofori added that the collaboration would promote both heritage and leisure tourism while contributing to efforts to market Ghana as a tourism destination.

Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Dr. Collins Nunyonameh, said the initiative is expected to increase visitor numbers to the park while helping to tell the story of Dr. Nkrumah to a wider audience.

“More visitors means more revenue for the park, but above all, it will help us tell the story of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and help Ghanaians understand who we are as a people, where we came from and where we want to go,” he said.

Dr. Nunyonameh explained that the decision to partner with Volta Hotel was strategic because of the historical significance of the Akosombo hydroelectric project in Nkrumah’s vision of achieving economic independence through industrialisation.

Board Chairman of Akosombo Hotels Limited and Member of Parliament for Guan Constituency, Fred Agbenyo, described the initiative as long overdue.

According to him, the collaboration provides an opportunity to tell the story of Dr. Nkrumah in its entirety by linking the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park with some of the most enduring symbols of his developmental legacy, including the Akosombo Dam and the Volta Lake.

He said Nkrumah’s legacy remains a valuable national asset that could contribute significantly to Ghana’s tourism industry if properly promoted.

The proposed package is expected to cost GH¢3,500 per person and will cover transportation, accommodation, meals, guided tours, souvenirs and participation in the Dodi World cruise experience.

Organisers say the initiative is expected to increase visitation to both the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Volta Hotel, strengthen tourism partnerships and promote Ghana’s heritage and leisure destinations through a unified tourism experience.
