President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, July 10, 2026, joined residents, sanitation workers and government officials at Tse Addo in Accra as the government rolled out a nationwide clean-up exercise across seven regions affected by recent flooding.

The two-day exercise forms part of efforts to restore environmental sanitation following heavy rains that caused widespread flooding, claimed about 29 lives and left several communities battling clogged drains, accumulated refuse and damaged infrastructure.

The clean-up campaign commenced at 6:00 a.m. on Friday and is expected to run until 1:00 p.m., with activities resuming during the same period on Saturday, July 11.

Participants are undertaking the desilting of choked drains, clearing refuse from streets and public spaces, and removing debris to improve the flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of future flooding.

Friday’s exercise has drawn participation from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), the security services, educational institutions, public and private organisations, waste management companies and members of the public.

Saturday’s activities are expected to focus more on community participation, with residents, traditional authorities, volunteer groups, MMDAs, security agencies and sanitation service providers leading clean-up efforts in their respective localities.

The nationwide exercise was announced by the government following the recent floods, which affected several parts of the country and exposed persistent challenges with poor drainage and waste management.

Government has urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in the exercise, stressing that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and remains essential to preventing flooding and safeguarding lives and property.
