Manasseh questions usefulness of PAC as A Plus demands chairperson’s removal

Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has questioned the effectiveness of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

According to Manasseh, the oversight committee responsible for examining the Auditor-General’s report on public accounts, only serves the purpose of wasting public funds and raising the emotions of Ghanaians.

“PAC has not proven to be useful, besides wasting public funds and raising our emotional temperatures about the malfeasance the Auditor-General uncovers,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

“When the James Avedzi-led PAC ordered the assemblies to discontinue their fraudulent fumigation contracts with Zoomlion, that Zoomlion contract was renewed, and the contract term was increased from two to five years,” he cited.

The post by Manasseh comes on the back of a petition by the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus), to the Speaker of Parliament demanding the removal of the current Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, from her role.

In his petition addressed to the Speaker on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, A Plus said the MP for Atiwa East, who served as Deputy Minister for Finance during the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, has lost the moral right to lead the oversight committee probing issues of malfeasance uncovered by the Auditor-General’s report under the previous administration.

Highlighting the petition against the chairperson and her role in the previous administration, Manasseh, who shared a picture of Abena Osei-Asare, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and the late Deputy Finance Minister John Kumah, questioned the relevance of PAC, describing her actions on the committee as nuisance drama.

“One is late. One has run away, leaving behind a trail of dirty footprints. And the remaining one is enacting nuisance drama against new appointees who appear before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to answer for the mess created by the administration she served as a Deputy Minister of Finance. The audit reports under consideration cover financial malfeasance during her period,” he said.

“The moral authority of the current PAC Chair, Abena Osei-Asare, who was Ken Ofori-Atta’s deputy, is being challenged. But the bigger question should be the usefulness of the annual drama we witness at the PAC sittings,” he added.
