Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially declared the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general elections after securing a decisive victory in the party’s presidential primaries held on Saturday.

The Electoral Commission announced the certified results at the NPP headquarters following collation from polling centres nationwide, confirming Dr Bawumia as the winner with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48% of the total valid votes cast.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong came in second place with 46,554 votes (23.76%), while Dr Bryan Acheampong placed third with 36,303 votes (18.53%). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum followed in fourth with 1,999 votes (1.02%), and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong rounded out the field in fifth with 402 votes (0.21%).

A total of over 211,000 delegates participated in the election, casting their ballots at 333 polling centres spread across all 275 constituencies. The process was conducted under tight security and monitored by party officials and observers to ensure transparency and credibility.

Provisional results had earlier indicated a strong lead for Dr Bawumia, who won in the majority of regions, including sweeping 12 out of 14 regions in some regional breakdowns. The outcome crossed the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff, solidifying his position as flagbearer-elect.

In his victory speech following the declaration, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude to the delegates for their overwhelming support and pledged to lead a unifying and inclusive campaign ahead of the 2028 elections.

He called on all party members, including supporters of the other aspirants, to come together and rally behind the NPP to secure victory for the party in the national polls.

The declaration caps a competitive race that saw intense campaigning by the five aspirants, with Dr Bawumia emerging as the preferred choice to carry the NPP’s banner once again.
