A devastating fire has destroyed sections of the Mallam Atta Market in Accra New Town, leaving traders in distress after the blaze erupted around midnight on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The fire, which sent thick smoke billowing over the densely packed trading area, triggered panic among residents and vendors as flames rapidly engulfed wooden stalls and goods.
Three fire tenders from the National Headquarters, Flagstaff House, and Circle Fire Stations were promptly deployed to the scene.
Firefighters worked through the night to contain the inferno, battling challenging conditions amid narrow alleys and tightly clustered structures that hindered access and delayed containment efforts.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread quickly, consuming merchandise and wooden stalls worth thousands of cedis.
As of early Thursday morning, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) remained on site, working to fully extinguish the flames and prevent further spread to adjacent shops and homes.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway. No casualties have been reported so far, but several traders are said to have lost their entire inventory.
Police have secured the affected area to facilitate firefighting operations and support the ongoing probe into the midnight outbreak.
