Police shoot residential robbery suspect dead, retrieve stolen vehicle

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the fatal shooting of a suspect during an intelligence-led operation that led to the recovery of a stolen Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicle and other exhibits linked to a violent residential robbery in Accra.

The incident dates back to December 4, 2025, when armed men reportedly invaded the room of a female complainant and robbed her at gunpoint.

The assailants tied her hands and legs, covered her face with a plastic bag, and escaped with her Toyota Hilux pick-up (registration number GW 9834-25), an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and other personal belongings.

Following sustained intelligence gathering by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), officers tracked down a key suspect identified as Clement Kofi Aidoo, also known by aliases including Joseph Abequaye, Yaw, and Paddy.

During the operation to apprehend him at Danso near Bawjiase in the Central Region’s Awutu Senya District, the suspect allegedly attempted to attack the officers, reportedly wielding a sharpened cutlass after jumping through a window. In response, the police shot him, injuring him in the process.

He was immediately rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment. A search of the suspect led to the retrieval of the stolen Toyota Hilux pick-up, the complainant’s iPhone 16 Pro Max, and several documents believed to be connected to criminal activities. Further investigations revealed that the suspect had a history of similar offences.

In November 2025, he absconded with a Toyota Camry saloon car belonging to an ailing police officer. The officer had engaged the suspect through a recruitment agency (KKN Domestic and Recruitment Agency at Bubuashie) to care for his father.

The suspect fled with the vehicle (registration GC 123-12), the officer’s police and voter ID cards, cash amounting to GHS12,200, and other items. That vehicle was later recovered in the Central Region after the suspect abandoned it during a police chase.

The Ghana Police Service, in a press release dated February 11, 2026, signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal networks, recovering stolen property, and ensuring that individuals involved in violent crimes are brought to justice.

The service assured the public of continued efforts to enhance security and combat robbery and vehicle theft across the country. Investigations into the case remain ongoing.
