President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York today, Thursday, September 24, 2026.
According to a schedule released by the Presidency, the President’s address is expected at approximately 2:00 p.m. Ghana time.
The address will form part of the General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly, which is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.” The General Debate brings together heads of state and government to present their countries’ positions on major global challenges and priorities.
President Mahama’s address comes after a series of engagements in New York focused on global development, Africa’s economic self-reliance and reparatory justice.
On September 21, he hosted a high-level event on the Accra Reset, under the theme “Full Circle: Making Global Development Work Again,” where discussions centred on reshaping global development and strengthening the capacity of countries in the Global South to determine and finance their own development priorities.
On Wednesday, September 23, he also hosted a high-level event on reparatory justice, focusing on international cooperation for the return and restitution of African cultural properties and heritage.
The President had earlier been scheduled to use his General Debate address to present Ghana’s official statement, following engagements with world leaders, the UN Secretary-General and international business leaders.
His participation at the 81st UN General Assembly also follows bilateral engagements with leaders including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Kenyan President William Ruto and Jordan’s King Abdullah II, with discussions covering trade, technology, economic cooperation and Africa’s role in global affairs.
The address is also expected to be a significant milestone in Ghana’s participation in the General Assembly.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mahama’s scheduled appearance will be the 25th presidential address by a Ghanaian president at the UN General Debate since Ghana’s first such address by President Kwame Nkrumah in 1960. It will President be Mahama’s seventh General Debate address.
